How To Naturally Fight Cold And Flu
The cold and flu season is here which means many people are looking for ways to prevent and fight off illness naturally. There are many natural home remedies that we can use to help keep our families healthy. Here are some simple ways on how to naturally fight cold and flu season.
Taking a warm bath is great for relieving stress and relaxing the body. Soaking in a detox bath will relax and help pull out toxins in your body. When my family starts feeling under the weather or we have been flying I have them take a detox bath. Our bodies are exposed to millions of toxins from the air, water, food, chemicals, and even soap we use. It is important to soak in a detox bath 1 to 2 times a week to help flush out the toxins your body is carrying. It will also help boost your immune system and help prevent illness. The best part is taking a detox bath is simple and inexpensive to fight off cold and flu. We use epsom salt for our detox baths because it is loaded with magnesium and is very potent in detoxifying the body.
Detox Bath Recipe:
- 2 cups epsom salt
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide
- Run warm to hot water in tub.
- Pour 2 cups of epsom salt into bath water.
- Sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda into bath water.
- Pour 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide into bath water.
- Swish ingredients around with feet or hand.
- Soak for 20-30 minutes.
For small children I half the ingredients for the detox bath and run warm water for them.
You are also free to use oils in the detox bath just make sure its NOT the spicier oils like fighting five (thieves or whatever brand you use), oregano, or thyme. We like to use any one of these oils: lavender, lemon, eucalyptus, immunity, and/or frankincense.
Make sure there is a glass of water close by because you will get thirsty. You don’t want to get dehydrated. Detox baths are better to take before bed because as it draws the toxins out of your body it makes you tired. You should sleep better after taking a detox bath. Soaking in a detox bath is a great way to help fight off cold and flu.
Another way to naturally fight off the cold and flu is taking elderberry syrup. I am obsessed with elderberry syrup! Elderberry is a fruit that comes from the Sambucus plant. This fruit is antiviral, antibacterial, and high in antioxidants. Elderberries help boost immunity and are also known for curing the cold and flu virus. It is also great for respiratory health by clearing up sore throats, cough and cold. So, where do you find elderberry syrup? You can purchase through Amazon or at any health food store. You can also make your own elderberry syrup. Katie Wells at Wellness Mama has a great recipe to make your own elderberry syrup at home. The instructions are simple when taking elderberry syrup.
Instructions to PREVENT Cold and Flu:
- Take a 1/2 to 1 tablespoon daily.
- Take a 1/2 to 1 teaspoon daily.
Instructions to FIGHT Cold and Flu:
- Take a 1/2 to 1 tablespoon every 2-3 hours.
- Take a 1/2 to 1 teaspoon every 2-3 hours.
When fighting the cold and flu virus bone broth is a must. Grandma was right when she said chicken soup heals the body. The immune system is working hard to fight off the infection and it needs a good boost of powerful minerals that will be easy on the digestive system. The amino acids in bone broth also helps break down the mucus that your body is trying to get rid of. I have a great recipe for bone broth that can be made in the pressure cooker or the slow cooker. Herbal teas are perfect for soothing the body while fighting off cold and flu. My favorite herbal tea is and I also like their herbal tea. Both of these teas are delicious, soothing, and help strengthen the immune system. I like to add a squeeze of lemon juice (because extra vitamin C is good) and a little bit of raw local honey to my herbal tea before I take that first sip of warming tea.
Apple Cider Vinegar
This natural way of fighting off the cold and flu is not for the faint of heart. Although, if your desperate to get relief, most of us will try anything. It’s important to make sure you purchase because there is a must that is in the vinegar that carries good probiotics. Probiotics are a colony of good bacteria that boosts the immune system, which in turn helps fight off the cold and flu virus. The acid in apple cider vinegar also helps loosen the mucus out of the throat. Here is the best way to take apple cider vinegar:
- 1 tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar
- 8 ounces of warm water
- mix ingredients together in a small glass.
- gargle for 30 seconds to a 1 minute 2 -3 times and swallow.
- You can gargle with apple cider vinegar 3 to 4 times daily.
